Doctoral degree

Bibliothèque Garrigou, livres de droit, étudiants et ordinateurs, anciennes facultés
The head or heads of the establishment bestow this national degree on doctoral candidates who have successfully defended their thesis before an examination committee.
Receipt of the doctoral degree confers on the awardee the title of doctor.
The doctoral programme is a comprehensive research-based course.
Thesis preparation takes place within a professional context and lasts between two and four years, although it may last longer in certain disciplines of humanities.
Doctoral training comprises the elaboration, rationalisation and production of new concepts or methods; it also includes the development of such concepts or methods through articles and works.
This training requires research-based work coordinated by a thesis supervisor, sometimes the teaching of classes and, in all cases, the candidate’s active and professional participation at the host institute.
